"I've only been seriously cycling for around 12 months. In my teens, I was never off my bike and used to go out with my local club, Dundee Thistle. When I left school and went to college I never really bothered about the bike. It wasn't until, in my early twenties that I bought a mountain bike and dabbled with that up until a couple of years ago when a friend talked me into buying a road bike again. Last year, after speaking to Jonathan at Pedal Power in West Calder, he suggested I start going out with the club on a Tuesday night.
"I went into this thinking, I'm pretty fit this will be an easy ride out. Well, I was never more wrong! I knew there was science connected with cycling but I always thought that was for the pro's. The Tuesday ride night quickly proved to me that even some of the amateurs level of fitness was really high. Over the winter I decided to embark on Gary's training plan to see if it would increase my overall base fitness, in preparation of the 2010 season. I was a bit concerned at first that the plan would be a bit ambitious for my life style. A young family plus a fairly demanding job means I don't get a lot of free time but Gary's plan was ideal and it allowed me to fit in sessions that suited my busy week. In the beginning much of my time was spent on the turbo trainer but again this suited me and now that the weather is improving I am commuting to work 2 or 3 times a week on my bike which means I can get my training done there and back! So far I'm feeling really good on the bike, but I guess time will tell once I'm back doing the Tuesday night APR? Gary has also set me some goals for later in the season too"
